| Abstract Scope |
One of the key issues for properly indexing electron backscattered diffraction is determining the geometrical relationship between the detector and diffraction origin on the sample, known as locating the pattern center. This is an difficult issue because shifts in the pattern center are nearly identical to changes in the orientation, the optimization space has a high conditionality, and the optimization function is relatively flat with multiple local minima near the global minima. In this talk we will show that particle swarm optimization is well suited to address these issues as it is particularly robust against non-continuous optimization paths with multiple local minima. Using simulations of EBSD and experimental examples, we will also show that the method is useful when used on many EBSD patterns at once, and the needed search space for the pattern center is large. |
