| Abstract Scope |
Modifications to the anode assembly design of a smelter may be used to capture amperage creep or energy savings, depending on the strategy of the operation. However, an anode assembly design path should not be judged only by its enhancement of electrical operation, but by its overall performance in concert with the rest of the cell. Heat balance and electrical performance must be considered together to ensure a viable anode assembly implementation. To enable such design work, a thermal-electrical-electrochemical model of the anode, bath, and metal system was developed to simulate the operating behavior of the anode assembly in conjunction with the cell heat balance. This model, developed using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.4, features: explicit calculation of electrochemical phenomena, coupled electromagnetic and electrochemical heating for accurate heat generation, and moving mesh deformation of the bath to capture the effect of changing anode-cathode distance. |
