Theorists have sought for many years to understand the structural nature of relaxed grain boundaries (GBs). In this study we present results after extracting interfacial line defects using the Interfacial Line Defect Analysis (ILDA) tool from the 7,305 relaxed FCC GBs published by Homer et al. (Acta Mater., Vol. 234, 2022) which spans the five-dimensional GB space. This analysis reveals that only about 2% of the GBs in this database contain no line defects. An even smaller percentage, just 0.2%, are vicinal in nature, meaning that they have non-zero net Burgers vector content. The remaining ~97% of GBs are e-coherent, meaning that they contain a new class of interfacial line defects called discohesions. These discohesion enhance the state of coherency of the interface without introducing any net Burgers vector content. Using our analysis results, we establish connections between line defect content and the thermodynamics and kinetics of the GBs. |
