Direct observation of alloy solidification at the nanoscale is essential for understanding the mechanisms that govern microstructure evolution but remains experimentally challenging. We present recent advances in in operando synchrotron X-ray nano-imaging for directional solidification studies, enabled by the development of a compact two-zone furnace compatible with full-field transmission X-ray microscopy. The platform provides controlled thermal gradients while achieving nanometer-scale spatial resolution and sufficient (subsecond) temporal resolution to capture evolving solidification microstructures. To overcome the limited acquisition speed of full 3D tomography, we introduce a reconstruction framework that leverages high-resolution ex situ three-dimensional reconstructions as priors for pseudo-4D analysis of dynamic processes. This approach enables quantitative tracking of evolving interfaces and microstructural features during solidification while substantially reducing imaging requirements. Together, these experimental and computational advances establish a new framework for investigating solidification kinetics and validating mesoscale models with unprecedented spatial and temporal fidelity. |
