| Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear reactors require robust real-time capabilities to monitor key material characteristics, such as coolant composition. While optical sensors present a promising technology for this application, their constituent materials experience radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) in harsh reactor environments. Understanding the highly transient nature of RIA during and after irradiation, particularly when concurrent thermal annealing is applied, is essential for sensor development. We highlight NSUF-supported development of a novel furnace-integrated optical characterization system for irradiation testing. We discuss the experimental design for performing in situ, real-time transmissivity measurements of bulk optical samples and fibers exposed to gamma and neutron radiation while concurrently heated. By using differential absorption and optical frequency-domain reflectometry across a broad spectral range, this system bridges several experimental data gaps in optical materials. This work ultimately supports the development of resilient optical instrumentation for next-generation nuclear systems. |
