| Abstract Scope |
Understanding molten metal wetting is essential for designing transient liquid phase joining processes for ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). This study investigated the wetting behavior of molten Fe, Co, and Ni on ZrC–25 vol.% MoSi₂ and NbC–25 vol.% MoSi₂ composites using a high-temperature sessile-drop technique at 1600°C under vacuum. Time-resolved imaging was employed to quantify contact angle evolution and spreading kinetics during metal–substrate interaction. All molten metals rapidly spread and infiltrated the ceramic substrates, accompanied by significant interfacial reactions. NbC–MoSi₂ exhibited lower initial contact angles than ZrC–MoSi₂, indicating superior wettability. Work-of-adhesion calculations showed that Co produced the strongest interfacial interaction with both substrates. Post-test microstructural characterization revealed carbide dissolution–reprecipitation and the formation of silicide-containing reaction products. These results demonstrate that combining in-situ imaging with interfacial analysis provides valuable insight into reactive wetting mechanisms and identifies Co as a promising metallic constituent for joining carbide-based UHTCs. |
