| Abstract Scope |
Eutectic Al-Ca alloys represent an attractive alternative to eutectic Al-Ce alloys for lightweight high-temperature structural applications, offering lower density and cost. The strength of these alloys results from the Al4Ca phase present at very high volume fraction (~ 30 vol%) and with a submicron plate thickness/spacing. Al4C undergoes an allotropic transformation between monoclinic and tetragonal phases at ~ 120 ºC as well as twinning (in the monoclinic phase), providing plasticity mechanisms beyond dislocation motion, and potentially enabling strain recovery via the shape-memory and superelastic effects. Achieving a understanding of the mechanical properties of pure Al4Ca and how they may be tailored through additional microalloying is thus critical for optimizing the performance of Al-Al4Ca eutectic alloys. Here, we experimentally characterize the mechanical behavior of the Al4Ca phase with and without ternary Sr- and Ba-microalloyed additions, utilizing macro- and micro-scale experiments to identify deformation mechanisms and their sensitivity to compositional variation. |
