Abstract Scope |
Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is a reliable and flexible technique for forming metals into different geometries while minimizing fractures caused by large drawing steps. Hot ISF has proven to be an effective method of forming Magnesium AZ31 at temperatures above 250 °C. However, this process requires high thermal control and complex manufacturing set ups. Forming Mg alloys presents difficulties at room temperature due to its hexagonal crystalline structure, which limits the activation of slip systems. This research investigates warm incremental forming of a novel Ca-bearing Mg alloy. The study assesses the formability of this alloy at temperatures below 100 °C using resistance heat in conjunction with Double-Sided Incremental Forming (DSIF). By developing a forming limit curve and identifying the conditions for desirable formability, this work shows improved formability at low temperatures when compared with AZ31. |
