We present a GPU-native framework for fracture-aware topology optimization with and without gradients: two strategies sharing one finite-element engine, both generating hierarchical, damage-tolerant architectures. The engine is a JAX-based GPU code for phase-field cohesive-zone fracture and contact-aware mechanics, built for vectorized, batched simulation. The gradient-based strategy differentiates end-to-end through the history-dependent fracture simulation: damage irreversibility destabilizes naive automatic differentiation, so we recover finite-difference-verified sensitivities via implicit adjoints of the projected damage problem, driving constrained, robust design of periodic unit cells under stochastic material variability. The gradient-free strategy evolves cellular-automaton rules that grow periodic and aperiodic architectures, with a genetic algorithm searching rule space and the same engine supplying high-throughput fitness evaluation; evolved structures are compared against biological motifs via shape embeddings. Benchmarking both on shared fracture objectives maps where adjoint gradients accelerate design and where discontinuous, path-dependent landscapes favor rule-space evolution—a scalable, verified strategy for GPU-accelerated generative materials design. |
