Commercial FeCo alloys commonly include V and Nb, which lead to the formation of non-magnetic V-rich and Nb-rich carbides. These carbides can act as pinning sites for magnetic domain walls, but when isolated can lead to the formation of spike domains as described first by Néel. Typically, 2-spike domains are seen around carbides and inclusions, but it was found in this alloy and geometry that the originally proposed 4-spike domain configuration occurs. This was observed using Lorentz STEM techniques, including a novel 4D-STEM mode and STEM-DPC, and Lorentz Fresnel imaging. For the STEM techniques, the calibrated shifts due to the Lorentz force were measured, and a sample thickness obtained from EELS to enable a semi-quantification of the B-field around the inclusions. This work was also supported by GPU-accelerated Mumax3 micromagnetic simulations, which provided a close match to the experimental data collected. |
