Molten slag electrolysis with a liquid metal electrode involves strong coupling between interfacial deformation and electrochemical current distribution. An experiment–simulation framework combining in situ 9 MeV X-ray computed tomography with an electrochemical–hydrodynamic model of a gas–molten slag–molten Fe system was developed in this study. The incompressible Navier–Stokes, Cahn–Hilliard, secondary current distribution, and linearized Butler–Volmer equations were solved simultaneously in a two-dimensional axisymmetric finite-element model. Molten Fe morphology observed under an applied potential was compared with a same-scale simulation using an estimated Fe–slag interfacial tension. The model reproduced the observed flattened electrode shape by inverse analysis. The validated simulation further revealed that deformation redistributes ionic current paths and local reaction intensity along the Fe–slag interface. This CT-informed approach enables quantitative linkage between operando electrode morphology and electrochemical behavior in molten slag electrolysis. |
