Abstract Scope |
With the projected increase in the consumption of aluminum alloys by three-fold within the next 25 years, there is an increasing interest to find novel ways to anneal aluminums in shorter time frames to reduce the overall energy requirement necessary applications. This research explores the influences of magnetic fields during annealing to achieve improved mechanical properties along with the refinement of the microstructure during the aging treatments of AA7xxx alloys to shorten the post processing time. The effects of the magnetic fields between 0-9 Tesla during natural aging, and artificial aging at 120oC and 170oC on their precipitation’s characteristics (size, shape and distribution) and mechanical properties will be presented. The potential applications of using magnetic field to tailor the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys will be discussed. |
