| Abstract Scope |
In the e-waste recycling plant at Aurubis Richmond, a slag holding furnace is used to retain slag for a sufficient period to facilitate the recovery of entrained metals and to provide a steady supply of slag to the granulation system. Under the static conditions within the slag holding furnace, accretions can readily form and gradually accumulate over time. Accretion formation is undesirable because it reduces the effective furnace volume and impedes tapping operations. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms responsible for excessive accretion buildup on an industrial scale. The findings are supported by the characterization of slag and accretion samples, as well as thermodynamic analyses of the phase equilibria associated with accretion formation. The study also evaluates potential accretion mitigation and removal strategies and provides a practical basis for accretion control in industrial operations. |
