Abstract Scope |
Ultem 1010, otherwise known as Polyethermide (PEI), has various uses in medical, aerospace, automotive, and electrical industries due to its advantageous heat resistance, chemical resistance, and mechanical properties. However, the high temperatures and mechanical complexity required to additively manufacture this material make using this material for certain applications difficult. This research aims to characterize the tensile strength, strength variation, and failure modes of 3D printed Ultem 1010 on a custom open-source high temperature 3D printer. These results will be used create a comparison between the mechanical properties of Ultem 1010 samples fabricated with this custom machine and those manufactured by similar machines on the market, validating our open-source architecture and process parameters. This research is an important step toward creating an open-source alternative to traditional high-temperature 3D printers and pave the way to fully characterize the mechanical properties of Ultem 1010. |
