| Abstract Scope |
Traditional and fusion-based repair methods for corrosion-damaged steel bridges induce stress concentrations and residual stresses, compromising structural integrity. In this study, a hybrid cold spray–friction stir process is experimented to repair A572 bridge steel using HY-100 steel powder due to the limited commercial availability of A572 powders. HY-100, a low-carbon, quenched-and-tempered alloy, offers excellent corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties, including low-temperature impact toughness, making it ideal for bridge steels in cold environments. The study optimized HY-100 powder properties, A572 substrate conditions, and processing parameters to enhance repair quality. Microstructures were examined using scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction, while mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength were measured and compared to the base metal. Corrosion resistance was evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization and salt fog exposure in NaCl solutions. The findings highlight this hybrid repair process as a promising solution for restoring steel bridge infrastructure. |
