Due to the first-order nature of martensitic transformations, NiTi exhibits abrupt strain bursts that result in significant hysteresis during cyclic loading. Spatial modulation of composition through dilute off-stoichiometry (≤3 at.%) around the equiatomic NiTi baseline has emerged as a promising strategy to tailor these transformations and achieve linear superelasticity. Although this approach has been extensively studied, the specific role of modulation orientation remains largely unexplored. In this work, we systematically investigate how the orientation of compositional modulation relative to martensitic habit planes influences the resulting superelastic response. This crystallographic alignment dictates the activation of select twinning variants and determines the angular mismatch between the interface and favorable habit planes. Collectively, these factors define the transformation pathway, thereby governing microstructural patterning, strain localization, and hysteresis behavior. Overall, these findings highlight the critical role of modulation orientation in designing concentration modulations to enable linear superelasticity in NiTi alloys. |
