| Abstract Scope |
Due to their controlled degradation under physiological conditions and their Young’s modulus being close to that of cortical bone Mg-Y-Zn alloys containing Long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures are promising candidates for next-generation biodegradable implant materials. Mg-1.8Y-0.6Zn alloy and variants with addition of Gd (1.6 wt.%), Ag (1 wt.%), or Ca (0.4 wt.%) were cast, homogenized and extruded at 400 °C with an extrusion ratio of 1:25. The microstructure, mechanical properties, degradation in simulated body fluid (SBF), in vitro cell viability, and in the case of the Ag-variant the 8-week in vivo safety were evaluated. The results show that the microstructures contained Mg grains and 14H/18R LPSO phases. The base alloy exhibited the highest yield strength, while trace additions improved ultimate tensile strength and ductility. Degradation rates remained low (0.11–0.17 mm/y). All alloys showed excellent in vitro biocompatibility, and the Ag-variant demonstrated post operative safety without adverse reactions. |
