Multiple techniques are needed to determine their physical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of nuclear materials. An intermetallic alloy consisting of Inconel 718, tungsten (W), nickel (Ni), and tantalum (Ta) was developed for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) to sustain high operational temperature and neutron irradiation. Profilometry showed height differences of the bonded materials. The intermetallic alloy was then studied using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Using high mass resolution spectra, Cr, Ni, and Ta components were identified in the bulk of the material. Depth profiling results showed evidence TaNi alloy formation with TaNi as the prominent peak and significant other peaks such as TaNi2-, TaNi3-, and TaCrNi-. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used to calibrate depth scanning. Intermetallic species were identified in ToF-SIMS. This study provides validation of the designed alloy composition, offering insights into the microstructural and compositional changes of novel materials to be used in extremes. |
