| Abstract Scope |
Metal fused filament fabrication (Metal FFF) offers a low-cost alternative to powder bed fusion, but its adoption is limited in resource-constrained research environments due to the need for solvent or catalytic debinding and controlled-atmosphere sintering. The Virtual Foundry's Filamet™ 316L stainless steel filament instead employs thermal debinding followed by kiln-based sintering, providing a practical processing route with reduced infrastructure requirements for metal additive manufacturing.
This work investigates the feasibility of this approach using standard university laboratory equipment. Specimens will be fabricated via FFF and processed through thermal debinding and sintering according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Mechanical characterization will include tensile testing to determine yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, complemented by Vickers hardness measurements. Optical metallography will be used to evaluate grain structure and porosity evolution. The relationship between processing, microstructure, and mechanical behavior will be established to assess the viability of accessible metal FFF in academic environments. |
