Abstract Scope |
New refractory alloys for high temperature applications require excellent mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation resistance. Recently promising chromium alloys have been developed with Si and Mo additions which show high oxidation and nitridation resistance. In a BCC superalloy approach, further Ni and Al alloying additions to the Cr-Mo-Si system were explored and show retained high mechanical strength above 1000°C but are detrimental to the oxidation behavior. Optimization of the BCC superalloy composition and potential coatings on the alloys to provide high temperature oxidation resistance above 1000°C are described. Resulting microstructures, influence on approximated fracture toughness and mitigation of nitridation and oxidation mechanisms are characterized after exposure in air and 10vol.%H2O-containing atmospheres to represent more realistic future application conditions, such as gas turbine blades. |
