| Abstract Scope |
To produce high-purity titanium dioxide (TiO2) from low-grade titanium (Ti) concentrates, a process consisting of soda roasting and hydrometallurgical treatment was investigated. Soda roasting was carried out at 1600 K using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and carbon (C), reducing hematite (Fe2O3) to iron (Fe) while converting TiO2 and oxide impurities, such as silica (SiO2) into sodium titanate and sodium silicate, respectively. Consequently, Na4Ti5O12, Na2SiO3 and bulk Fe-C alloy were obtained, achieving an Fe recovery efficiency exceeding 99 %. Subsequently, the residue obtained after separating the bulk Fe-C alloy from the soda roasting product was subjected to water leaching followed by hydrochloric acid leaching at 333 K. The titanyl chloride (TiOCl2) solution obtained through the leaching processes was hydrolyzed to precipitate hydrous TiO2, which was subsequently calcined at 1073 K for 6 h to produce rutile TiO2 powder with a purity of 99 %. |
