| Abstract Scope |
High-quality metallurgical bonding is critical to performance and durability of structural steel components subjected to demanding service environments. Conventional fusion-based cladding techniques often introduce defects associated with melting and solidification, including dilution, residual stresses, and cracking. This work presents High-Velocity Laser Accelerated Deposition (HVLAD), a novel laser-based solid-state deposition process that utilizes laser-generated shock waves to accelerate coating particles toward the substrate at high velocity, producing metallurgical bonding while minimizing thermal effects. Bonding mechanisms and interfacial microstructure are investigated through comprehensive microstructural characterization, including scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and compositional analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolution of the coating-substrate interface, grain refinement, and the absence of significant phase transformations away from the bonding region. Mechanical characterization demonstrates strong interfacial adhesion, highlighting the potential of HVLAD as an alternative joining and repair technology for structural steel applications where high bond integrity and limited heat input are desired. |
