This presentation discusses the modeling choices made when simulating gas gun impact experiments using LANL’s Lagrangian FLAG hydrocode. Gas gun experiments are critical to characterizing high velocity, high strain-rate behavior of materials used in extreme engineering applications. Due to the cost and complexity of these experiments, it is important to develop simulations which closely recreate target behavior. In this work, we follow four copper target impact experiments with various flyer materials. Model complexity is varied from a baseline model, to a threshold criterion for materials failure, to a sophisticated microstructural failure model which accounts for material porosity. It is shown that the explicit consideration of microstructural phenomena is necessary to reproduce the near-instantaneous state changes associated with shock physics modeling, particularly as found in the plastic modulus. Several configuration choices are evaluated, and preferred parameter values for the Pmin failure criterion are established for each of the four flyer materials. |
