| Abstract Scope |
Parts produced by additive manufacturing often require or undergo high-temperature processing, yet their deformation behavior differs from that of conventionally made material because they start with a distinct as-built microstructure. Reliable design and qualification of these components therefore depend on deformation data that reflect the additively manufactured state rather than assumptions carried over from wrought or cast alloys. This work uses thermomechanical experiments to assess the reliability of printing a maraging-steel-type alloy (M789) onto conventionally produced high-strength steel (N709) for tool and die applications. Precise high-temperature deformation experiments were performed, followed by extensive microstructural analysis, numerical modeling, and validation experiments. The results demonstrate the potential use of constitutive modeling in metal additive manufacturing for simulating the in-service stress conditions of additively manufactured alloys. |
