Abstract Scope |
Phase field modeling has been considered an important tool for simulating the microstructure evolution in metal additive manufacturing (AM). Due to the rapid cooling rates in AM and numerical stability concerns, phase field models are usually implemented using an explicit time integration scheme that could require extremely small time steps. This work presents an alternative time integration algorithm to overcome this challenge. The algorithm is based on a stabilized semi-implicit scheme that has demonstrated great potential for releasing the time step constraints while keeping the energy stability for solving the general Allen-Cahn type equation. This work will investigate its performance in the context of grain growth simulations with rapid cooling rates. |
