Abstract Scope This study evaluated steelmaking slag as railway ballast through chemical, mineralogical, and physical characterization using XRD, SEM-EDS, and X-ray Microtomography (CT). The main phases identified were RO (Fe, Mg, Ca, Mn oxides) and quartz, with porosity varying due to prior processing. CT revealed internal void distribution and its impact on bulk density. Physical tests assessed expansibility and fragmentation resistance. The results suggest that, with proper control of microstructure, steel slag shows potential for sustainable use in railway systems.
