| Abstract Scope |
In collaboration with many colleagues and students over five-plus decades, my research on radiation effects in materials has evolved from investigations focused on atomic displacement damage to studies on the coupled effects of atomic displacements with hot electrons created by highly ionizing ions. These studies include radiation effects in metals and alloys using beta-particles, neutrons and ions (1970-1977); alpha-particle and alpha-decay damage in nuclear fuels, nuclear waste forms, and related phases using intense alpha particle sources and actinide-doping techniques (1977-2007); in situ transmission electron microscopy and ion channeling studies of irradiation effects, amorphization, and defect recovery in ceramics (1994-present); theory and computational modeling of radiation effects in ceramics (1997-present); competitive and synergistic effects of intense ionizing radiation on defect production and evolution in semiconductors and ceramics (1997-present); radiation effects in high-entropy alloys and high-entropy oxides (2015-present); and ionoluminescence of ceramics under ion irradiation at cryogenic temperatures (2015-present). |
