Type IV cracking is a critical degradation mechanism in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steel weldments used in sodium-cooled fast reactors. In this research, we investigate the mechanical and microstructural changes of F/M steel weldments using grades 92, HT9, and 420SS loaded in a three-point bend configuration while simultaneously exposed to liquid sodium for 1180 hours at 577 °C. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy reveals corrosion and cavity formation across the weld region at depths ranging from 2 to 8 μm. Stresses above 250 MPa promote creep cavity formation along grain boundaries in the outer HAZ, particularly in Grade 92. Critically, this research defines a novel criterion, based on circularity and Feret ratio which successfully differentiates Type IV cavities from general voids. The results of this work offer insights into Type IV cracking in heat-affected zones and support the development of robust structural materials for sodium fast reactors. |
