Materials optimized for magnetic performance are often susceptible to defect accumulation under service stresses, highlighting the need to understand magnetic field-coupled plasticity. Here, we investigate the impact of plastic deformation on the magnetic performance of L21-ordered MnCu2Al. Bulk magnetization characterization reveals that deformation results in an order of magnitude decrease in saturation magnetization. These changes are accompanied by large increases in defect density, as determined from synchrotron X-ray diffraction line-profile analysis. Ab initio gamma surface calculations suggest that the planar defect structures that are generated by plastic deformation locally stabilize antiferromagnetic coupling interactions within the otherwise ferromagnetic matrix. DPC STEM imaging reveals a local magnetic contrast consistent with the predicted antiferromagnetic ordering at the defects. Our estimations of the volume of material impacted by the defects can account for the changes in bulk saturation magnetization, establishing magnetoplastic coupling as the primary mechanism responsible for altering the magnetic performance in MnCu2Al. |
