| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium has long provided excellent lightweighting performance for structural applications. However, magnesium alloys are typically tailored to specific manufacturing methods, such as forging, extrusion, thixomolding, and high-pressure die casting, to optimize process performance. This study describes the development of UniMag, a high-temperature, creep-resistant universal magnesium alloy designed for use across multiple structural manufacturing processes. Process validation and compositional analysis show how its alloy design supports versatile performance. In thermo-mechanical simulations of forging, UniMag demonstrated a workability window comparable to the standard AE44 alloy while showing significantly lower susceptibility to cracking. This alloy could support closed-loop recycling across multiple manufacturing processes and ultimately enable production from 100% recycled magnesium chips with only minor alloying additions, improving both sustainability and supply resilience. |
