| Abstract Scope |
Advanced real-time imaging techniques provide critical insight into the thermal phenomena governing solidification, microstructure evolution, and defect formation during melting and solidification processes, including casting, welding, and fusion-based additive manufacturing. However, accurate in situ temperature measurement remains challenging because emissivity variations reduce the reliability of conventional thermal imaging. In this work, a two-color thermography technique using a single commercial color camera, combined with high dynamic range imaging and image processing, was developed to obtain spatially and temporally resolved melt pool temperatures during gas metal arc welding. The resulting temperature fields were used to quantify melt pool dimensions, thermal gradients, and cooling rates across a range of processing conditions. The results demonstrate that this accessible imaging approach enables quantitative thermal characterization for process monitoring while providing a scalable pathway toward physics-informed process control and rich datasets for model calibration and validation. |
