| Abstract Scope |
Advanced manufacturing processes like robotic laser welding for space applications impose complex thermal cycles on components that shape the microstructure and material properties. Material properties serve as the foundation for accurate predictions in computational models. However, it is a challenge to acquire reliable material property data in a cost-effective manner. Conversely, ultrasonic waves interact with a material’s microstructure nondestructively in the elastic regime. As a result, pertinent information like elastic modulus, density, and ultrasonic wave velocity can be inferred from ultrasonic imaging techniques. Laser ultrasonic imaging provides a pathway for researchers to obtain microscopic resolution material property data to add to their simulations to improve computational model’s accuracy. This study explores laser ultrasonic imaging as a digital validation modality to measure elastic modulus and density data for laser welds in space applications to support cost efficiency and fundamental design of structural components. |
