| Abstract Scope |
While molten fluoride salts show promise as coolants, fuels, and breeding media for advanced fission and fusion systems, material compatibility remains an obstacle. Trace metallic impurities in the salt can oxidize alloying elements, promoting intergranular corrosion. However, the specific effects of these impurities on corrosion are not sufficiently understood, and evidence from Ni-20wt.%Cr systems suggests that not all impurities necessarily aggravate corrosion. This study examines how corrosion responses vary with impurity speciation, focusing on iron-based alloys, such as Fe-20wt.%Cr and 316H stainless steel. Alloys were exposed to FLiNaK containing approximately 0.04 wt% of various metal fluoride additions. In Fe-20wt.%Cr, preliminary results show that the inclusion of ZnF2 causes less corrosion than the inclusion of CoF2, which is predicted by thermodynamics. These results further demonstrate the impurity-dependence of molten fluoride salt corrosion in model alloys, although understanding the dependencies in a multi-element alloy system remains challenging. |
