| Abstract Scope |
Cold sprayed copper coatings are promising for applications requiring high electrical conductivity and good mechanical performance. Interparticle bonding is a key factor controlling the properties and structural integrity of these coatings. This work examines how the feedstock powder particle size and post-spray heat treatment influence the properties of cold-sprayed copper coatings. Increasing the particle-to-critical velocity ratio generally improved bonding and properties. However, coatings originating from finer powders achieved electrical conductivities above 90% IACS and about 6% elongation, whereas coatings fabricated from coarser powders exhibited 0% elongation even at similar particle-to-critical velocity ratios, due to thicker interfacial oxides that limited metallurgical bonding. Although heat treatment improved bonding and properties through oxide redistribution and interfacial sintering, it was shown that particle size also influences the annealing response of the coatings. These results provide guidance for optimizing powder selection and post-processing conditions for cold-sprayed copper coatings. |
