| Abstract Scope |
This talk will look at work by the author and also that published in open literature looking at protecting the leading edges of wind turbine and rotor craft blades from erosion from rain droplet and sand impingement. Coatings deposited by HIPIMS and CVD will be explored using cavitation erosion that simulates incubation and early erosion periods of rain erosion to screen coating performance. Cold sand erosion tests on polymer coatings will be discussed and thin film alternates discussed. In addition, a curved fronted jet impingement rig that simulates rain droplet impacts and erosion mechanisms droplet impact generates will be discussed as a facility ready to measure stress fields for coated systems. It is capable of full field measurement of stress waves and displacements induced by impingements up to 200 m/s for 2 mm radius curved fronted water jets and can validate erosion models. |
