| Abstract Scope |
Cyclic slip irreversibility is a key element of degradation during cyclic fatigue and fatigue crack initiation. Recent quantitative measurements made with Heaviside digital image correlation (H-DIC) of irreversibility within individual slip bands will be reviewed. H-DIC reveals that slip bands exhibiting high displacements and a high level of reversibility in the first cycle serve as crack initiation sites. Microstructural features associated with slip band formation will be discussed. A strong correlation between the slip amplitude in the first cycle and fatigue strength at 109 cycles is observed. This gives new physical insights to the empirical Basquin law. |
