| Abstract Scope |
The pioneering work of Professor William Weber established many of the fundamental concepts that underpin our understanding of radiation effects in ceramics and their applications in extreme environments. Building on this foundation, this talk will highlight recent advances in elucidating how atomic-scale structure governs the radiation response of complex carbide ceramics. We show that grain boundaries are inherently off-stoichiometric and that their complex energy landscape drives radiation-induced segregation, which can unexpectedly enhance corrosion resistance in high-temperature aqueous environments. In high-entropy carbides, we demonstrate the presence of chemical short-range order and reveal its influence on radiation-induced swelling and defect evolution. Complementary first-principles calculations provide predictive insights into phase stability and identify diffusion mechanisms distinct from those observed in metallic high-entropy systems. Together, these results provide new strategies for the design of radiation-tolerant ceramics for advanced nuclear energy technologies. |
