| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) is a solid-state process that requires an in-depth understanding of particle-scale deformation and interfacial damage during fabrication. To enhance the matrix-matrix bonding and the homogenous distribution of the particles, core-shell particles were used, with an electrodeposited thin matrix shell prior to cold spray deposition. Cu-coated W particles were chosen as the model system for the desired metal matrix composite. X-ray micro-computed tomography was used to quantify the volume fractions of copper and tungsten, the copper shell thickness, and the cluster morphology of the powder feedstock. To understand the deformation behavior at high velocities, laser-induced particle impact testing (LIPIT) was done on individual particles. Finite element simulations were conducted to understand damage initiation and load partitioning and compared to the experimental results. The roles of Cu shell thickness and interface strength in governing matrix deformation and load transfer to the W particles will be discussed. |
