| Abstract Scope |
Ferrochromium is a critical feedstock in the manufacturing of stainless steel and other chromium-containing alloys. Ferrochromium is manufactured in high, medium, and low carbon varieties, with production of the latter generally relying on metallothermic reductants such as aluminum. Circular economy considerations may make secondary sources of aluminum attractive reductants, however, the propagation of scrap impurities into ferrochromium products must be considered. Herein, different sources of aluminum scrap are explored as reductants to produce ferrochromium. Interactions between scrap and mineral impurities are considered in the context of chromite concentrate upgrading via sulfidation. Thermodynamic modelling and experimental testing at the laboratory scale are employed to evaluate partitioning of various scrap impurities between ferrochromium alloy and slag product phases. Product compositions and morphologies are characterized via SEM-EDS and ICP. Trends in ferrochromium product purity are reported as a function of chromium content. |
