Abstract Scope |
This study aims to demystify process-structure relationships to optimize directed energy deposition (DED) parameter selection and lay the groundwork for microstructural outcome prediction. The use of nickel-based alloys has shown recent promise in minimizing brittle phase formation in iron-carbon heat-affected zones (HAZ). Further, this research employs heat treatment of the final deposit to relieve residual stresses, which has shown success, particularly in the HAZ. Still, understanding the exact effects of parametric variation on the outcomes of deposits remains a difficult task. As a result, this work maps the connection between process parameters—i.e., energy density and powder mass flow rate—and the resultant properties of deposits, including dilution and residual stresses, measured using X-ray diffraction. The results of this work elucidate the microstructural outcomes of deposits as a function of input parameters, which enables more predictive control of final part properties and optimization strategies for adaptive control of remanufacturing processes. |
