| Abstract Scope |
Elucidating the structure-property relationships and formation of the passive films on complex intermetallic systems under electrochemical conditions are critical for ascertaining the corrosion behaviour. For the Ni-Nb alloy, controlled oxidation is done via three-electrode electrochemical setup in aqueous and alkaline electrolytes and is systematically investigated using XPS, SEM and TEM. EDS results suggest the presence of Nb7Ni6 phase along with few eutectic fractions of NbNi3 and Nb2Ni. XPS indicates the formation of multi-component Nb2O5 along with other Nb-oxides (NbO, NbO2) and minor Ni-containing phases Ni(OH)2 and NiO. The oxide layer thickness is determined to be ~5 nm, with an additional hydroxide layer. Cross-sectional TEM reveals oxygen enriched layer with ~10 nm thickness. Nb-rich oxide is present near the surface and Ni-enriched sub-surface zone at the interface. The findings provide direct insight to the electrochemically formed passive films in Ni-Nb systems and establish correlation between the potential, oxide structure, and chemistry. |
