Establishing structure-property relationships in amorphous materials is hindered by the difficulty of quantifying their disordered structures. Using high-statistics four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM), we directly link nanoscale medium-range ordering (MRO) to properties across three metallic glass systems. In Zr-based alloys, smaller and more frustrated MROs correlate with enhanced ductility and glass-forming ability (GFA) by governing shear transformation zone activation. In Ti-based metallic glasses, Be addition disrupts icosahedral MRO structures, tuning glass stability. In CuZr-based equiatomic systems, increasing configuration entropy reshapes MRO, affecting GFA and nanohardness. These results establish 4D STEM as a unified framework for relating nanoscale structural heterogeneity to the behavior of diverse amorphous systems. Furthermore, quantitative analyses of high-statistics nanodiffraction datasets provide structural descriptors, including MRO type, size, spatial distribution, and rotational symmetry, which are correlated with key material properties. |
