| Abstract Scope |
The increasing demand for natural sand in the construction industry, combined with the accumulation of mining waste, has driven the search for sustainable alternative aggregates. This study presents a comparative characterization of sand obtained from iron ore tailings (IOT) and natural river sand (NS) to assess its potential as a fine aggregate for concrete. The materials were characterized in terms of physical and mineralogical properties, complemented by chemical characterization of IOT. Compared with NS, IOT exhibited a finer particle-size distribution, higher fines content and specific gravity, and lower water absorption. Mineralogical analysis showed quartz as the predominant crystalline phase in both materials, while chemical analysis of IOT revealed a composition predominantly consisting of SiO₂ and Fe₂O₃. These characteristics should be considered when determining suitable replacement levels. Overall, IOT shows potential as a partial replacement for natural sand, contributing to mining waste valorization and supporting circular economy principles. |
