| Abstract Scope |
From optimizing commercial lithium-ion battery cells to developing new battery chemistries like lithium-metal anodes, reliably measuring lithium is critical. Lithium is a challenging element for many conventional techniques, and few instruments can measure lithium directly from air-sensitive battery components in an air-free environment.
A new mass spectrometry technique combines Laser Ablation Laser Ionization (LALI) with Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (TOF-MS) under vacuum. LALI-TOF-MS simultaneously measures lithium, fluorine, impurity elements, and the elements associated with electrodes’ active materials. LALI-TOF-MS provides detailed spatial characterization through elemental mapping and depth profiling. The technique creates millimeter-scale elemental maps with resolutions ranging from 5-150 microns. For depth profiling, the ablation laser removes as little as 10s of nanometers of material and repeating the elemental mapping process results in 3D reconstructions. Such capabilities accelerate development of new battery chemistries, process control of commercial cells, development of appropriate formation cycling procedures, and failure analysis. |
