| Abstract Scope |
Silicon-based ceramic matrix composite (CMCs) components and their environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) have recently been incorporated into the hot section of gas turbine engines for improved efficiency and performance. Advanced coatings have been developed as a part of NASA programs but relevant environmental testing is critical in order to understand the durability in combustion environments. This work will show the process of how a coating was first developed in the laboratory, scaled to a component level, and then tested in a NASA-designed and built materials test sector in a flametube combustor facility. The flow regime is characterized by a combination of high-temperature, high-heat flux, and high-velocity that components experience in gas turbine engines. Initial testing of the advanced coating and the potential durability in 3,000°F combustion environments is discussed and contrasted to laboratory data at lower heat fluxes and velocities as well as future design considerations for high temperature EBCs. |
