| Abstract Scope |
A notable phenomenon observed during microparticle impacts such are common in cold spray, is jetting: material from either the particle or the substrate is ejected around the periphery of the impact interface, forming a characteristic jet-shaped residue. Despite its crucial role in bonding, the detailed geometric structure and nature of jets that form upon impact are still not well understood due to limited direct study. In this work, we employ the laser-induced particle impact test (LIPIT) to systematically produce jets at known velocities, and then explore those jet structures with microscopy techniques. We focus on the gradual development of the jet structure and the use of new modes of sample preparation and examination at the fine scales of the jets. Such observations provide new insights into its characteristics. |
