The Beamline for Materials Measurement (BMM) at the National Synchrotron Light Source has a growing program applying X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to nuclear and radiological materials. XAS provides a direct measure of the valence state of metal atoms and of local configurational ordering about metal sites. As such, it is a powerful complement to other lab- and synchrotron-based methods for measuring atomic and electronic structures. In recent years, visitors to BMM have examines systems relevant to all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, from characterization of fuel materials to materials engineering of fuel rod cladding, to separation chemistry of nuclear waste products. In this talk, I will provide am overview of the measurement capabilities provided by BMM, many developed in collaboration with other labs in the DOE complex, with a focus on how these capabilities are be applied to nuclear and radiological materials. |
