Efforts to understand molten halide salt electrochemistry are highly important for mitigating corrosion in these environments for use in Gen IV nuclear reactors. In this work, electrochemical measurements are taken showing the decrease in corrosion rate in common structural alloys exposed to FLiNaK salt when the reducing impurity Li is added. A dynamic reference electrode is used to provide stable and repeatable potential measurements that are not otherwise performed in fluoride-based salts. Additionally, a model is used to predict this effect using thermodynamic and electrochemical equations. This model was originally created for molten KCl-MgCl2 salt but is expanded to accommodate FLiNaK salt. Electrochemical potentials are calculated using the Nernst equation based on the ratio of activities of metals and metal ions at the surface of the electrode and the Butler-Volmer equation is used to determine current density values. Results between the model prediction and measured values are compared and discussed. |
