| Abstract Scope |
This talk will review three innovations enabled by long-term NSUF irradiation and post-irradiation examination (PIE) campaigns. In this age of automation and AI/ML, innovation has become synonymous with acceleration – researchers aim to collect more data faster, and the nuclear industry aims to use this data to rapidly qualify and deploy new materials and new reactors. Irradiation+PIE campaigns are the centerpiece of the NSUF portfolio, but are time-consuming, costly, and increasingly considered counter to “acceleration”. But these campaigns enable radically disruptive innovations: (1) irradiation-induced amorphization of immiscible interfaces facilitates self-rejuvenation; (2) irradiation defects activate different deformation-induced phase transformation pathways, opening routes to engineering shape-memory behavior in materials; and (3) advanced manufacturing artifacts can form linear complexions under irradiation, leading to an unprecedented reduction in irradiation embrittlement. These examples show that scientists must use our cognitive assets to contextualize phenomena and question unexpected behaviors, to advance frontiers in nuclear materials. |
