| Abstract Scope |
The development of emerging precipitation-hardening alloys frequently outpaces the availability of commercial wire feedstocks, limiting the rapid evaluation of wire-based additive manufacturing processes. This work introduces binder jetting as a prototype-scale wire feedstock synthesis platform by directly fabricating near-net-shape wire from metal powders, reducing reliance on multiple conventional wire manufacturing steps. CuCrZr and 17-4PH were selected as representative precipitation-hardening copper and stainless-steel alloys to demonstrate the transferability of the proposed manufacturing methodology across different alloy systems. Binder-jetted wires were fabricated with a controlled target diameter of 1.2 mm compatible with WAAM feedstock requirements and optimized through debinding and sintering to achieve dimensional stability and controlled density. The synthesized wires were subsequently deposited by arc and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and hardness testing. This work establishes a scalable wire feedstock synthesis for rapid development and evaluation of emerging precipitation-hardening alloys. |
